“Does Jesus go with beer?” A co-worker asked me this when I said that I’d be going to Theology on Tap, Wednesday night (July 5, 2006) at Frankie’s on the Prado. When he said this, I tried to imagine what Archbishop Gregory would say in my place. Unfortunately, I’m not that creative.

“I think the objective is discussing faith in a casual atmosphere,” I offered. Then I explained that it would be my first time going, so I didn’t know what to expect. Like me, you may have thought about attending TOT before and talked yourself out of it. I found the prospect of going alone a little intimidating, so I took a friend. It turns out this is a good idea this month. If you take someone new you are entered into a raffle to win a free trip to Italy in 2007. Additionally, you meet great people from YAM who want to introduce a little Jesus into your day. If you’re like me, there are plenty of workdays when that’s the nicest thing someone is going to do for you, so that’s no small thing.

The guest speaker that evening was Brother John Ignatius Little, on “Looking for the Real Jesus.” My guess is that if you attend any night in the series, you’re going to hear some things you agree with and other things you question. The important thing is that you’re going to meet people who are in the thick of things. Brother John, for example, likes to go to a new city with no money in his pocket and tell people about God’s love. Fr. Ricardo Bailey, or “Fr. Crunk,” if you prefer, has found a way to bring Jesus to the secular airwaves. When these people witness to you, it isn’t just random speculation. They speak from experience. It’s clear that they have a passion for their message, and a heart for Christ.

At the risk of repeating myself, that’s no small thing.
